The history of Mont Saint-Michel

The oratory was thus built and the island was named Mont Saint-Michel. Quickly, pilgrims flocked to meet the newly installed canons. In the 10th century, the latter were replaced by Benedictines. This change marks the official date of the foundation of the Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel. At the same time, Normandy was created following a negotiation between the French king Charles III and the Viking chief Rollon. Is the Mont Saint-Michel Norman or Breton?
Through the centuries
The following decades the Mont Saint-Michel will undergo many transformations, crypts, a church. Then the Wonder in the 13th century, a whole composed of the refectory, the cloister and the lodgings. Designed for monastic life under the impulse of King Philippe Auguste.

During the Hundred Years War, Mont Saint-Michel was besieged by the English. Much later, during the French Revolution, the Benedictines abandoned the place and it became a prison. It is only during the Second Empire that the restoration works are launched. The Mont Saint-Michel was classified as a historical monument in 1862. Pilgrims came back and tourism developed.

A tourist resort
From the beginning of the 20th century, Mont Saint-Michel became a popular destination. This highly religious place attracts by its authenticity and its preservation. Thus the cobbled streets multiply as well as numerous installations such as stores, hotels and inns.

The most famous inn in Mont Saint-Michel is without a doubt “La Mère Poulard”. Famous thanks to its soufflé omelette. A success that has not wavered since 1888! The story is still being written today as mass tourism develops.
New footbridge closed to cars.
In order to protect the wilderness of Mont Saint-Michel, the dike-road, built in 1878, which linked the continent to the mount, was destroyed in 2015, leaving in its place a footbridge, forbidden to cars.

What is the best time to visit?
The Mont Saint-Michel is accessible all year round but is most popular in summer from mid-June to mid-September. Visiting the Mont Saint-Michel in spring and autumn is a good compromise to take advantage of a mild weather with beautiful lights and a lower number of visitors. During your visit, if you want to come by foot from the parking, ask about the tide times (see here).
Practical information
Count one hour for the visit of the abbey dedicated to the archangel of Saint-Michel. Prefer the morning hours to avoid the crowd. Each hour of the day offers a different light and colors. The religious services are accessible to all (sung masses, Lauds or Vespers depending on the program).

How to get there:

Free bus shuttle to Mont Saint-Michel.
Free shuttle:
On site, buses are provided for the transportation of visitors from the paying parking lot to the Mont Saint-Michel. Called the “Passeur”, this continuous shuttle is free and will allow you to reach the bay. Don’t forget your Mont Saint-Michel ticket in the car.
By foot:
On foot, it is about a 45 minute walk from the parking lot to the abbey. The site is difficult to access for the disabled.
By train:
The nearest train station is located in Pontorson, 9 kilometers from Mont Saint-Michel. Once on site, opt for public transportation. Two regular public lines drop off passengers directly in the village, one of them at the entrance of the village. If you arrive at the Rennes train station (where the nearest airport is also located), be aware that a city bus transports to the terminus of the public lines.
By bike:
Several marked routes allow you to reach Mont Saint-Michel, while enjoying the beautiful scenery. The amateurs of excursions will be enchanted! From Notre-Dame de Paris, the Véloscénie, a 450 km cycling route joins the bay, crossing three regional natural parks. You can also arrive by the Véloroute des plages du Débarquement. Once there, the town is accessible by the Pont Passerelle where bicycles are allowed. You can park your bike on the parking lot at the entrance of Les Fanils or in the parking lot, in the portion reserved for two wheels.

By car:
From Paris, take the A13 freeway (towards Caen) or the A11 freeway (towards Le Mans). From Nantes by A84 (direction Rennes). A parking lot, accessible to cars, motorcycles and camping-cars is located right next to the Tourist Information Center. A portion is accessible to people with reduced mobility. Count 9,80 € for 24 hours in low season, and 15 € in high season with your car. Please note that your Mont Saint-Michel ticket does not include parking.
